What Happens if a Band Comes Off of Your Braces

Right, i just came back from the ortho they changed the wire and attached some sort of elastic band on the bottom set.

Anyways this little thing just popped out (see attached), it holds the wire onto the bracket i think. So im now wondering should i be bother going in again on monday tohave it put back in??

Thanks

You probably just need to ring them up and ask.
My orthodontist generally says that if it isnt causing any pain or discomfort it can be fixed at your next appointment.

Oh mine used to do that all the time, just wait until your next appointment if there's no bother or discomfort.

Umm I used to have braces when I was in year 7 and they gave me a packet of spare elastics coz you're supposed to change them everyday..
I don't know why you're othordontist hasn't done that

ugh braces. evil, vile instruments of mouth torture. if it's just the elastic i'd advise leaving it til your next appointment. if it was part of the metal that crushes all your teeth together i'd go back and get it refitted.

hope your mouth is feeling ok.

Ohh..
Maybe it was just mine then..
But you're supposed to change them regularly for hygiene reasons.

I think you are talking about 2 different kinds of elastic. There is the kind the orthodontist puts on each tooth, to hold the wire to the bracket. They stay on permanently til they are changed at an appointment. I think this is the kind that has come off here.
Then there is the other kind, that you put on yourself and have to change every time you brush your teeth. They hook onto your brackets, and usually go between your top and bottom teeth. These are the ones where you are given a packet to take home.
OP, so long as your wire is not flapping about or digging in then it would probs be OK to leave it til your next visit. If they are anything like my bro's department you wouldn't be able to get seen next week anyway.

Don't leave it, the elastics are powerful, and if not aligned correctly will shift your jaw/ teeth and you may have to wear the things longer. Get it sorted out Monday, because in 8 weeks, when your next appointment usually is, you may have caused damage, or slowed progress meaning you will have to wear the things longer.

I had spare ones anyway, as they are known for breaking rather easy

Oh yeah, probably then lol

You are supposed to put it on yourself! Simply hook the band around the upper brace then stretch to go round the bottom brace hook. Its very simple. I think it is to straighten your jaw...

The advice I always heard was to go back in if one popped off or broke because it wouldn't be doing it's job as well. Best bet would be to call them up and ask for advice - they'll be able to tell you whether you can leave it or not.

I've had braces for over 15 years now, its ok you don't need to go back.

of course he is, hes only 14yrs old!

i hope you meant 15months

the coloured ties from my braces fall out all the time, they're practically all gone by the time i get back to get the brace tightened again.

If the actual wire has come off I would go back as soon as possible. However if the elastic band has fallen off, I would just hook it back into place. I am sure when I had mine I had to change the band regularly anyway its not difficult.
