Why Canned Biscuits Are the Next Wonder Food

Of all the foods that come in cans, it's hard to believe that soft, flaky biscuits are one of them. Adults love this convenience food because it makes cooking that much simpler, and kids love the mildly terrorizing thrill of popping the can open.

Novelty aside, some talented home cooks and professional chefs on the internet have provided us with hacks to make the most of canned biscuits. Check out how this dough is great for making much more than a base layer for your favorite sausage gravy.

Cheese Danish

Canned biscuits are basic dough in a can, so you can make virtually any pastry with them. Satisfy your sweet tooth by turning a can of biscuits into a batch of yummy cheese danishes. Separate each uncooked biscuit, roll it out a little and create a depression in the center.

Fill the indentation with cream cheese. Sweetened or flavored cream cheese can add an extra kick. Next, bake the biscuits, allowing for a little extra time to get a light brown crust on the cheese. Add icing or fruit jam after the danishes have cooled.

Rhubarb Pie

Give your taste buds something different with a super-simple rhubarb pie. Uncooked rhubarb is tangy like a green apple. Cooked rhubarb has a milder, sweeter flavor. So, use it in whatever form best fits your palate.

Dust the raw biscuit dough with sugar before you put the biscuits in the oven. It's best to use plain canned biscuit dough. After the biscuits have finished cooking, separate the tops from bottoms and fill them with pieces of rhubarb and whipped cream. Use cream cheese instead of whipped cream for a more savory flavor.

Chicken Pot Pie

Instead of going through all the tedious efforts of making pie crust, make a savory chicken pot pie in half the time by using canned biscuits as the crust. First, mix together all of the ingredients for the pie filling. Try diced carrots, celery, peas, rotisserie chicken and a can of cream of mushroom, cream of chicken or cream of celery soup.

Put the filling in a casserole dish and top it with separated uncooked canned biscuits. Roll them out if needed to cover the dish. Brush them with a little butter halfway through cooking. Bake until the biscuits are cooked and the pie filling is bubbling.

Calzones

People love frozen pizza rolls, but you can do 'em big with biscuits! Use a rolling pin to flatten your separated biscuits to the thickness of a pizza crust. Next, put cheese, pepperoni and seasonings of your choice in the center of each biscuit.

Fold the flattened biscuits in half. Use a fork to press down the edges. This seals in the goodness and creates those authentic calzone ridges in the dough. For extra flavor, brush on melted butter or olive oil and add more seasoning to the outside of the calzones before putting them in the oven. Bake until the dough is cooked, and dip in marinara.

Peach Cobbler

Separate buttermilk canned biscuits, and dust them all with equal parts cinnamon and sugar. Roll the biscuits flat with a rolling pin, and cut them each into 12 pieces by cutting three vertical and two horizontal lines. Mix sliced peaches, sugar, butter, vanilla, salt, cornstarch and the spices of your choice together.

Then, mix the sugary biscuit pieces into the peach mixture. Pour everything into a baking dish and put pie crust (or more biscuits!) on top of the peach-biscuit mixture. Add butter, cinnamon and sugar to the top of the pie crust, and bake until golden brown.

Sweet and Spicy Chicken and Waffles

Did you know? Canned biscuits make a great substitute for waffle batter. If you have a waffle iron, just spray the interior plates with cooking spray before inserting a biscuit because this gooey dough can stick sometimes. Cook all the biscuits on the waffle iron. Next, fry up a batch of your favorite chicken.

Melt a pat of butter in a frying pan. Then, add 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar and 1/3 cup of your favorite hot sauce. Stir until the brown sugar dissolves. Dip the chicken in the sauce, and substitute the spicy sauce for waffle syrup if you dare.

Pizza

Squeeze the raw biscuits together into a single large dough ball. Use a rolling pin to flatten out the dough into a circle. Brush melted butter or olive oil onto the thin dough, and add seasonings like oregano or salt to taste.

Pour on a generous amount of tomato sauce, and cover the tomato sauce with a layer of your favorite shredded cheese. Add toppings like olives, pepperoni, spinach, onions, bell peppers and mushrooms. Remember to leave the edges of the pizza uncovered (except for butter and seasoning) so that there's a nice, flaky crust.

Cheeseburger Stuffed Bites

Brown seasoned ground beef in a skillet for about five minutes. Slice into each piece of biscuit dough but not all the way through — you're creating a pocket — and put two slices of cheese in each one. Open each biscuit up halfway, and put a scoop of ground beef inside.

Re-mold the biscuit into a closed dough ball, and bake the biscuits until they're golden and flaky. You can add relish, ketchup, bacon or any other of your preferred burger toppings to the ground beef. You can also add butter and sesame seeds to the tops of the biscuits.

Snickerdoodle Muffins

Who knew you could make muffins in a skillet? Melt butter, and stir in equal parts cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl. Bake the biscuits for about half the time listed on the package. Next, melt a small pat of butter in your skillet.

Place the half-baked biscuits side by side in the skillet until it's full. Pour the butter, cinnamon and sugar mixture evenly over the tops of all the biscuits, and put the biscuits back in the oven to finish baking. To make the recipe even better, use cinnamon-flavored biscuits rather than the original recipe.

Fried Oreos

Dip whole Oreos in condensed milk. Then, work the Oreos into the centers of the biscuits, and use your fingers to close the dough around them. Give the stuffed biscuits a light dusting of flour, and deep-fry them in oil.

The biscuits will cook quickly, so keep an eye on them. When they're golden brown, they're ready. Although they taste delicious plain, they're even better with toppings. Crushed Oreos, powdered sugar, chocolate syrup, strawberries, blueberries and sprinkles are just a few topping ideas.

Breakfast Paninis

This recipe requires a panini press or grill pan to give the classic bacon, egg and cheese biscuit a twist. To get started, slice a biscuit in half and then flatten out each half.

Cook the eggs and bacon in a separate pan. Then, place the scrambled eggs, bacon and cheese in between two flattened slices of biscuit and put the entire panini on the grill. Grill long enough for the dough to cook fully — go for those classic grill marks!

Cheesy Garlic Bread Sticks

You know those ridiculously good breadsticks that pizza restaurants sell? Make your own with canned biscuits! Pour a thin layer of melted butter on the bottom of a baking pan. Slice each biscuit in half, and put half of the halves in the pan.

Coat the tops of the halves with melted butter or olive oil and oregano, basil, salt and pepper. Top it off with shredded parmesan cheese and minced garlic. Put the other set of biscuit halves on top and season again, but use shredded mozzarella instead of parmesan for the topping.

Churro Cheesecake

Combine and flatten out a can of biscuits so that they form a thin crust, similar to the pizza dough. Mix cinnamon and sugar together, and spread this blend in a thick layer on top of the flattened biscuits. Some home chefs say that Crescent Rolls are better for this recipe than the big biscuits.

Mix sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, cream cheese and egg to make the cheesecake filling. Spread the mixture on top of the biscuits. Add another layer of cinnamon and sugar on top of the cheese filling and bake for 30 minutes. You'll know it's done when the top layer of cheese starts to brown.

Doughnuts

Canned biscuits make perfect doughnuts! Use a small cookie cutter to punch out holes in the center of each raw biscuit. Put the holes in the refrigerator to cook later. Fry each doughnut-biscuit in hot oil until it becomes golden brown on both sides.

Next, fry the donut holes. Use sprinkles, powdered sugar, maple syrup, chocolate syrup or any other topping you prefer as garnish. Powdered sugar and cinnamon sugar blends are much more manageable for the donut holes than frosting tends to be.

Strawberry Shortcake

Who says you need to make batter to have a cake? With a can of biscuits, you're less than 30 minutes away from a great strawberry shortcake. For this recipe, avoid using buttered or flavored biscuit dough.

Separate the biscuits when you remove them from the can and give them a light dusting of sugar. Then, cook the biscuits according to the package instructions. When they're done, open each biscuit and put a layer of sliced cold strawberries and whipped cream inside. Spreading on a little strawberry jam makes the dish even better.

Meatball Sub Bake

Skip the pasta with this tasty recipe. Cut up each biscuit in the can into eight pieces. Stir the biscuit pieces into zesty marinara sauce. In a separate pan, cook up some meatballs. Add the meatballs and a generous helping of shredded mozzarella cheese on top of the biscuit-marinara mixture.

Photo Courtesy: Marco Verch Professional Photography/Flickr

Cover the dish with foil and bake it for 40 minutes or so. This hearty dish makes a perfect appetizer for a party. All of the ingredients blend together for a really flavorful dish. There's a lot of room for personalization, too — why not try a version with pulled pork, barbecue sauce and provolone cheese mixed with the biscuit pieces instead?

Enchilada Casserole

Warm salsa, enchilada sauce, shredded pre-cooked chicken and canned black beans on the stovetop. Then, cut a pack of canned biscuits into eight pieces per biscuit. Stir the biscuit pieces into the enchilada mixture, and move everything from the stovetop to a casserole dish.

Bake everything together for 30 minutes. Top off the dish with cilantro, chives, sour cream and shredded cheese. Mexican cheese blends are perfect. You can also make the dish extra-spicy by adding jalapeƱos. Stirring in chopped yellow onions and minced garlic to the enchilada mixture also adds flavor.

Sausage Biscuit Bake

Serving a bigger group? Instead of cooking regular sausage, egg and cheese biscuits, make that breakfast classic into a casserole. This recipe calls for jumbo-sized canned biscuits. Start by crumbling and browning the sausage in a pan. Cut the biscuits into 10 pieces each and stir the biscuits and sausage together in a casserole dish.

Whisk together milk, eggs, salt and pepper in a bowl. In a separate bowl, mix powdered gravy and water. Pour both of the liquid mixtures into the casserole dish and bake everything in the oven. What a savory way to start the morning!

Philly Cheesesteak Stuffed Bites

Start by cooking chopped roast beef slices, pepper jack cheese, chopped white onions and diced green peppers in a pan. Cut raw biscuits into pockets, similar to the cheeseburger bites. Fill each biscuit with the cheesesteak mixture, and use your fingers to seal the biscuit shut.

Bake the biscuits in the oven. Because the meat is already cooked, you're only waiting for the tops of the biscuits to become golden brown. For extra cheesiness, add more shredded cheese on top of the biscuits before you bake them. This gives all the flavor of a cheesesteak in kid-friendly, portable bites.

Quesadillas

Open a can of biscuits and separate each biscuit into two slices. Each slice will become one side of a quesadilla. Use a rolling pin to flatten out each biscuit half, and use your fingers to mold the flattened biscuits into a round tortilla shape.

Next, brush each biscuit piece with melted butter. You can also sprinkle on some taco seasoning. Create your quesadilla by adding your favorite filling and covering it with another biscuit piece. Cheese, chicken, ground beef, roasted vegetables and steak make great quesadilla fillings.

Pecan Bars

Start by rolling out all of the biscuits until they're very thin. Then, arrange the flattened biscuits so that they cover the bottom of a small baking pan. This will form the crust of your bars. Brush the flattened biscuits with melted butter.

Finish the recipe by pouring on store-bought pecan pie filling. You can also make the filling yourself by mixing sugar, butter, corn syrup, vanilla, an egg and chopped pecans. Bake and let cool. Cut the treats into bars.

Bacon Potato Bites

Combine the best elements of a baked potato and a savory biscuit into one delectable dish. Start by baking a few large potatoes and frying up a few strips of bacon. Scoop all of the potato innards out of the skins and into a bowl, and crumble the cooked bacon to form bacon bits.

Mix the potato and bacon with shredded cheese and chives. Slice the uncooked biscuits into pockets and add a scoop of the potato mixture inside each biscuit. Use your fingers to reseal the biscuits. Brush melted butter onto the dough. After they're baked, top each biscuit with a dollop of sour cream.

Nutella Biscuits

Use cinnamon roll- or chocolate chip-flavored canned biscuits for this recipe. If all you have are plain biscuits, you can combine chocolate chips into the dough with your fingers or sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on the dough. Separate each biscuit into two halves, and spread a generous layer of Nutella on each slice.

Then, stack all of the biscuit slices on top of each other to form a single log. Place the log in a small loaf pan, and bake until the biscuits become dark brown. Garnish the dish with frosting or powdered sugar.

Crab Pizza

Mix crab meat, parmesan and cheddar cheeses, parsley and garlic powder in a bowl. You can add in bacon bits, jalapeƱos or red pepper flakes for even more flavor. On a baking sheet, flatten out the biscuits to form a thin pizza dough. Brush melted butter over the top of the dough.

Sprinkle minced garlic on top of the butter. Finally, spread the crab meat mixture over the top of the pizza, leaving the edges uncovered to form the crust. Add a little more cheese on top, and bake until the crust is golden brown and flaky.

Pumpkin Loaf

Slice each biscuit in half and sprinkle equal parts cinnamon and sugar on the biscuit halves. In a separate bowl, mix an egg, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie spice together. Spread that mixture generously on the top of each biscuit half.

Then, stack all of the biscuits on top of each other and place them into a loaf pan, similar to the Nutella biscuits. Bake the loaf until the visible edges of the biscuits become dark brown. While it's cooking, mix powdered sugar, cinnamon and heavy whipping cream to form a super-sweet glaze.

Chicken Kolaches

In a saucepan, melt a pat of butter. Then, gently fold flour, salt and milk into the simmering melted butter. Stir constantly, allowing time for the mixture to form a thickened white sauce. Add pre-cooked diced chicken and your favorite shredded cheese to the mixture.

After all of the ingredients are blended together, remove the pan from the heat. Flatten out each biscuit. Add the sauce mixture to the center of the flattened biscuit, and then wrap the edges around the filling, similar to a danish. Bake until the biscuits are golden brown.

Chicken and Dumplings

The hardest part about making chicken and dumplings is making the perfect dumplings, but canned biscuits streamline the process. Start by melting butter in a big pan. Once the butter is melted, add diced carrots, celery and onions. When those ingredients are cooked, add pre-cooked shredded chicken, chicken broth, cream of chicken soup and evaporated milk.

Cut up a can of biscuits into four pieces per biscuit and coat the pieces with flour. Add the biscuit pieces to the top of the pot. Once the biscuits are cooked through, your delicious, quick dumplings are ready to enjoy.

Chili and Cheese Cups

This recipe couldn't be easier! Start by cooking chili according to your favorite recipe (or heat up your favorite canned version). You can make it with meat or veggies and add as few or as many spices as you prefer. Once the chili is done, open up a can of biscuits and separate them. Use a spoon to carefully make indentations in the centers of the biscuits.

The indentations should be deep enough for the biscuits to form a bowl shape. Insert a spoonful of chili inside each indentation and bake the dish until the biscuits are golden brown. Top these cups off with cheese, salsa, diced onions and sour cream.

Monkey Bread

Monkey bread is the kind of thing that can look pretty complicated at first glance, but it's really easy with canned biscuits. Start by cutting each raw biscuit into four smaller pieces. Mix up equal parts cinnamon and sugar in a bag, and shake the biscuit pieces in the mixture just as if you were breading pieces of fried chicken.

Next, stir together brown sugar and melted butter. Arrange the sugary biscuit pieces in a bundt cake pan so that they're stacked into two layers. Pour the melted brown sugar-butter blend over the biscuits, and bake.

Garlic Knots

Want to bring that Italian-restaurant charm to your kitchen? You can turn canned biscuits into delicious garlic knots, and you don't have to be a dough expert to do it. It's best to use the original, unflavored canned biscuits for this recipe.

Cut each uncooked piece of biscuit dough in half. Use a rolling pin to flatten each half, and cut them into three strips. Tie the strips into loose knots. Finally, roll the knots in butter, garlic, parmesan cheese and your favorite Italian seasonings. After baking the knots according to the cooking instructions on the biscuit can, you'll have a tasty treat.
